CRM 1301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Philippe Pinel, Moral Treatment, Head Injury
Document Summary
Confinement was necessary for people who are mentally ill. Humane treatment (they used to not treat them humanely, for them to get better they needed to be treated kindly). Inmates were chained, confined in small spaces, isolated. Pinel wanted this all changed and when he took off their chains and let them be more free they were easier to control, manage and help. 8 causes of mental illness of this time: Spasmodic passions (individuals who are overcome with feelings of rage or fright) Oppressive passions (individuals who are overcome with greef, sadness etc). Melancholic constitution (someone who was withdrawn, by themselves). Pinel had classifications based on symptoms: melancholia: person who had a mind that was fixed, obsessive, very negative, retreat from the world, feelings of hopelessness. Today it would be antisocial personality disorder, sociopath, psychopath. Different from pinel because he was looking at the causes not the symptoms.
