CRM 1301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Anal Stage, Genital Stage, Psychopathy Checklist
Document Summary
Denial: the choice to refuse reality, then, is unconscious as well. Refusal to admit to or accept a truth or fact differs from denial in that the individual recognizes or is conscious of the existence of the truth or fact but consciously refuses to accept it as such. Displacement: the mind substitutes either a new aim or a new object for goals felt in their original form to be dangerous or unacceptable. Projection: defend themselves against unpleasant impulses by denying their existence in themselves, while attributing them to others. Rationalization: controversial behaviors or feelings are justified and explained in a seemingly rational or logical manner to avoid the true explanation, and are made consciously tolerable. Reaction formation: when we feel one way but end up overacting in the opposite way. Regression: going back to a time when we are acting much more like a child.
