CRM 1301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Leilani Muir
Document Summary
Evolution of theories from roman empire to 20th century. Consensus = lack of questioning, minor reforms of system, micro level, demonic, classical & positivism. Trying to change a person but not circumstances. Conflict = fundamental questioning, major transformations, macro level, marxism. Attention being paid to the state, economy, broader picture. Clear sense of the major definition of crime under each and the solutions. Understand the context, point of departure that is influencing the definitions, explanations and solutions. Classical = monarch, state (shift away from religious power) Positivism = state, science, medical. (rise of science, state maintain its role but adding medical) Understand the lens through which these ideas have been constructed, and who they were administrated with. Nature of punishments, consequences of power to punish and power to prevent. On one hand, the state is condemning killing on the other hand they were carrying out capital punishment. The more things change, the more they remain the same.
