Document Summary
The twin streams of the discipline of criminology. Born as subdivision of philosophy: has matured, is no longer limited to serving the state. The objective is to develop a body of general principles regarding law, crime, and treatment. There is no orthodoxy or agreed focus in it. Many social scientists unite to study it from different points of departure. Criminologists assume that society is fundamentally fair and those who defy it have something deviant about them. Criminologists need to know what good evidence looks like in order to evaluate a situation properly. How we have gotten to where we are, not so much as why we look at the representative meanings (not theory driven, but theory building) These methods are not mutually exclusive from each other. Learning about crime tells us about our society, as crime directly and indirectly impacts us all.
