CRM 1300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Bourgeoisie, Restorative Justice, Left Realism
Document Summary
People are rational: there is nothing unusual about people who deviate from the norm or who commit crime. People do not commit crime because they do not want to jeopardize their bonds to conventional society. Durkheim, hirschi: social bonds: strong social bonds required to build up institutions. Thrasher, shaw, mckay: ecological studies of the city (chicago) inner city disorganisation and gangs (the need to belong to something) Attachement -- affective (emotional) ties to others: more evidence, less likely to engage in criminal behavior if they are attached to someone and fear losing those relationships. Commitment stake in the pursuit of conventional goals: like of having a family and a home (the american dream) It is important to have a stable family. Involvement being busy with conventional activities: limited and mixed evidence, young people with part-time jobs. Money and less supervision: less vandalism because people would have less spare time.
