CMN 3109 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Communication Theory, Lifeworld, Metatheory
Document Summary
Argue that all communication theories are relevant to a common practical lifeworld in which communication is already a richly meaningful term. Communication is not only something we do but also something we refer to reflexively in ways that are practically intertwined with our doing of it. What talking about talking tells us about theory: Since communication is already so discussed in society, communication theory can be constructed inductively through critical studies of everyday life. Why communication theory doesn"t yet exist as a field: Theorists haven"t found a way beyond disabling disciplinary practices that separate them. What we can do to bring it into existence: Can best be realized as a theory as a commonly understood set of assumptions that would enable productive argumentation across the diverse traditions of communication theory. Communication is a process whereby messages are transmitted and distributed in space fro the control of distance and people.
