Social responsibility theory: you expect the media to cover both sides of the story. They media can either escalate the situation or deescalate it. By reporting unethically (biased, dishonest,subjective etc. ) they escalate the situation. The preferred system for the news media to function under in our society. Imposes a burden on media practitioners and increases the need for testing the mass media as responsible instruments of a diverse society. Selfish reason: the media must be a credible source of information. To be credible they must be socially responsible. Dedication to disclosing the truth about all institutions (including one"s own) Admitting mistakes/ apologizing for them if necessary. Ethical principles/ values: fairness, balance, telling the truth. You achieve a principle by achieved a few values (principles are broader than values) Ethical standard: actions taken to achieve ethical values and principles. Ex. do not lie, cover all the information.
