The public sphere: the sphere of private individuals assembled in a public for the public use of reason and it"s existence is co-existent with the existence of modernity. Facebook was merely a facilitator of the public sphere that united people. Characteristics in traditional societies that are recurrent in all pre-modern societies. [strong hierarchy, social fixity, enormous social stability, and essentialism: untouched authority: (ex. God) difficult to challenge traditional rules, power was placed in the skies and communication occurred from top to bottom whereby challenging your standing in life was very difficult. Modern societies view change as a constant and an essential feature: example: romeo and juliet highlights the modern concept of having a choice in who you want to marry based on your personal preferences. Rather than in traditional societies, where responsibility overshadowed individual choice. Marriages were arranged for economic purpose, and there were requirements of not marrying outside your culture or religion.
