Document Summary
Initiating and maintaining personal and social relationships with others is essential for human survival. From our relationships with others is how we define ourselves and evaluate others. The way we perceive and fulfill social needs is influenced by culture. According to schutz (1966), we perpetually strive to fulfill 3 social needs through communication: inclusion, control, and affection. Control: the ability to be in charge of our own life and to influence people around us. Affection: the desire to show our love and to be loved by other persons. Human relationships can be defined as an interactional process of connecting ourselves with others in the network of social needs (chen and starosta, 2005) People from different cultures may meet each other"s needs for inclusion, control, and affection differently. Interpersonal relationships allow us to verify stereotypes of others, particularly those from outgroups whose cultural or social norms we are not familiar with.
