CMN2160 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Staples Thesis, Technological Change, Ideal Type
Document Summary
Toronto school of thought: view that technology can shape society/ create social change. Shift from focus on content to focus on form. The canadian economy relies on single industries: etc. fishing, fur, forestry. So we are very reliant on manufacturing economies like us and uk. So it"s difficult to challenge empires when you don"t develop yourself, and makes people working in these vulnerable. Ideal type: these types don"t exist, everything is somewhere in between. A medium is predisposed to being time bias or space bias. Tiam bias/ binding media: predisposed to having time binding messages/ encourages a time binding culture, emphasises continuity, community. Writing on tablets: you can challenge the collective memory= question authority. Space bias media: predisposed to sending out space binding messages, encourage bigger administrative role (more complex society), more abstract thinking. Space bound bias of writing developed at writing material developed (tablets=> paper) Encourages expansion of empires over space, ephemeral (because the paper may rip)
