CMN 2148 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Rationality, Thick Description
Document Summary
Culture is the sense people made about things along with the symbols/rituals that holds it together: accepted and patterned way of behavior, common understanding about what to think, feel, do etc, physical manifestations of the group, pattern of shared values/ beliefs that overtime produce behavioral norms adopted in solving problems. Themes for excellent organizations (don"t need to know by heart: a bias for action, close relations to the customers, autonomy and entrepreneurship, productivity through people, hands on, value driven, stick to the knitting, simple to the knitting, simple form, lean staff, simultaneous loose tight properties. Purists (researchers) critic of pragmatist approach: organizational culture is emergent; not shaped by managers, organizational culture is complex (how can one know what the culture even is); impossible to establish causal connections with outcomes (ex employee performance, note one culture; often competing subcultures, unethical to try to manipulate employees feelings and emotions.
