Qualitative: we create a theory as a result of our observation. Quantitative: we start with a theory and test it. Not enough channing tatum example: theory: more channing = bigger box office test the theory: they could have looked at the numbers, but also do a media content analysis or survey to gauge audience reception after the films release. Research questions guide the research and are refined and changed as researcher gathers data. Case studies: cases, not hypothesis nor variables guide the study, look at specific context, in depth and focus to particular instances in time, individuals etc. Grounded theory: the data we discover/build as we explore a case is what is used to build the theory. Concrete topic with posed research questions before data collection begins. Literature reviews guide the topic and the design of the research question (pull theories from past quantitative studies)
