Document Summary

Most of our communication time is spend listening- this has not really changed over the years. When asked about the ability of their boss to listen, most people who rated their bosses as good listeners said they were satisfied with their jobs (91%) 58% of these managers received listening training- these were mostly women who used nonverbal cues (people perceive women as better listeners) Nonverbal cues: mimicking facial expression of the person (empathy), nodding, smiling, eye contact. Bosses who listen well make the employee feel valued and validated- they make the effort to understand. Listening is not easy (hearing problems, personal concerns, rapid thought- capacity to think of other things, noise) All listeners do not receive the same message (we perceive things differently) Poor listening habits (interrupting, rushing, assuming what someone is going to say, listening bias) Doodling helps us process information better and focus.
