Physical- appearance, athletic abilities (body type, skin color, muscle tone) Social- competence in relationships (how we get long with people) Academic- intellectual capabilities (performance in school, ability to engage in resonating and critical thinking) Emotional- how you feel (impulse control, demonstrate maturity, cope with negative events) Our identity may contain elements that are not part of our self-concept. Our self-concept my contain elements that are not part of our identity. Newborn babies lack self-concept but they have a physical identity. There may be a gap between how we think someone sees us and how they actually see us. According to psychologist and philosopher william james, our self-presentations often respond to what others expect of us.
