Homosexuality in Greek Myth and Real-life Ancient Greece
-homosexuality could never be considered adultery in ancient greece !
-zeus, apollo, hermes, and poseidon are all gods who came to earth and had
intercourse w/ mortal women !

-aphrodite also comes and makes love to men (will talk about later) !
-zeus abducts a trojan prince named Ganymede & brings him to heaven to be his
boyfriend !
-poseidon visits on earth a young prince in the Peloponnese named pelops, which is
his boyfriend !
-apollo has a young boyfriend names Hyakinthos who ends up getting killed !
-Heracles is spoken of as having boyfriends (in the textbook) !
-heracles & hulas!
-heracles & iolaos (his nephew)!
-achilles and patroklos also had homosexual relations !
-in ancient greece, by 600 B.C, there had risen in the greek city an upperclass social
norm of male and female sexuality, that it was considered normal !
-the reason the date is interesting & that we think it emerged suddenly is because it
did emerge and it may have emerged from over the 50 years before thisā€” the city
had reorganized their army !
-hoplites = a citizen soldier who had to be able to aļ¬€ord his own armour & it was
your patriarchal duty to serve in the army and defend your city!
-the greek cities has to begin training many young and middle aged men!
-all these men worked together and what seems to have developed out of that
is an idealization of the beauty in military men (?)!
-a social norm of courtship and romance btwn, an older man and younger man
emerges !
-when the younger man got ~21, he was allowed to continue homosexual relations
but there was the pressure to ļ¬nd a younger man himself and couldnā€™t stay with the
older man !
