Timeline for the Mycenaean Civilization: 1600 – 1200BC
1490: the Mycenaeans invade Crete, take over Minoan Civilization
1400-1250: Mycenaean heyday – trade and war to Cyprus and Asia Minor
1220- a real life Trojan War?
1200-1150 : Mycenaean destruction they disappear
- Downfall of the Mycenaeans – around 1200BC almost all Mycenae sites are destroyed
- By 1150BC all sites are destroyed ; not all people killed but all kingdoms destroyed but don’t
know who did it
- Copper + tin= bronze 1220 BC
- Earthquakes
- 1220 BC - the sea peoples – may be pirates or Vikings that were probably looking for a place to
attack
- Pylos (1200 BC) the palace was destroyed by fire and collapsed – the tablets (writing) were
preserved and because of the fire the writing became permanent.
o Some writings were like the last days and it wrote like sacrifices and emergency prayers
to the Gods – they were probably under alarm cause something happening and coming
from and out at sea
- 1200-1100BC- 400 years – the Dark Age – 1150-750BC
o After mycenaeans there is no more linear writing
o For nearly 400 years there is like no more writing to read
o Heroes come after the mycenaeans destruction – the mycenaeans are the heroes – so
to speak like Hercules and other Gods would be the mycenaeans
o Dark age- no writing just relied on tradition
