Romans idealized the republic but they gradually stopped adhering to the laws which led to the downfall of the empire. State religion and government were intertwined: the romans consulted with special priests before declaring war, they consulted priests that specialized in divination to determine if it was appropriate to pass a law into a bill. Named for system of government: a republic res publica the public thing. Oligarchy never recognized popular sovereignty and necessity for reform. The date the romans got rid of the last king and established a new form of government, a republic.
