CLA2102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: The Persians, Mardonius
Document Summary
Under the cover of darkness, the greek fleet fled artemisium to meet up again at the island of salamis. To hide their escape, the greeks left their campfires burning with enough wood to last through the night. The persians didn"t realise that the greeks had left until the morning. * the persians did not chase the greeks. On the way, themistocles decided to engage in psychological warfare against the persian troops the athenians carved messages into the rocks along the way to salamis. They wrote messages saying it"s your fault, blaming the ionians for helping the persian fight their greek brothers. However, the messages weren"t meant for the ionians. The messages were meant to cause a rift in the persian operation, making them question their trust in the ionians among them. There was a surge of pride throughout greece. A sense of cultural unity had risen as a result of the sacrifices made by the greeks.
