Five villages came together to create a city sparta. It is pretty far away from the water which is why they didn"t colonize much and why they didn"t have a navy. They were called lacadaimons because they conquered all the people who they gave names to. The dwellers around were the perioeci and were forced to fight in the army. They were a bit outside since they were not given citizenship. They did all the jobs that most people would do because the only thing spartans could do was be soldiers. They didn"t have enough fertile land so they wanted to take over messenia. The glory that it might have had was all gone at that point. Sparta conquered and takes over all the land. Almost everyone there was turned into a helot. They divided messenia up and gave a farm to each man. The helot family has to give you half of the produce from the farm.
