There was an eruption in the 1950s that ejected a bunch of ash onto the island. Every time you have an explosion, you get earthquakes. There"s up to 18m of volcanic ash, that"s why there isn"t must digging. People would go to volcanic islands and harvest the products. Pumice and emery were used to polish marble statues. Lava rock is known for its thermal properties since it holds the heat well. Volcanic ash is what found the site in the first place. Volcanic ash has been used to make concrete since its waterproof. He wanted to find proof by looking for civilization on thera that was from around the same time. The red beach was probably a harbour for the new town.
