Augustus left notes in his will that none of his successors should expand the empire some did, however eventually, an equilibrium was reached and the empire took on a somewhat definitive form. Ad 14 augustus dies at 77 years old of natural causes this was not unusual, the upper classes of roman society lived into 60s and 70s. He died after a reign of 44 years. When augustus died, the empire was completely different from what is was when he claimed it in 44 bc. Although romans hated kings, for all intents and purposes, augustus was one he was called emperor, from the latin imperator, but he was a king in all but name. When he died, the system was set up like hereditary monarchy.
