Hamilcar barca was now dead, and his eldest son hannibal is left to deal with. He wants to use the land as a pretext for going to war against rome because he"s a vengeful dickhead. Saguntum for 8 months until, in 218, it falls. However, rome doesn"t really give a fuck and declares war against him. Rome figures that they"ll be fighting the war in spain and sends its army to massilia. But, hannibal, the sneaky s. o. b. knew that this flashpoint would attract them so he decides to take them by surprise. He leads his army including 20,000 infantry, 6000 cavalry, and 37 elephants through the alps in the winter in order to come through. He loses a shit ton of men on the journey (listen up nazi germany #russianwinters) and gains reinforcements from the gauls, after which the romans assemble another army and sends it up north.
