Lecture 13: the eastern greeks; philosophy; the ionic order. West coast of asia minor was resettled by greeks in early dark ages. W/ aeolian settlements to north & dorian cities to south. 12 cities of ionia were the most prominent - occupying central part of coast. Central part: agriculturally rich & well watered by hermos, kayster & maeander rivers. Ionian sculpture & ionic architecture were widespread; ionian poets & philosophers were leading. Has easy contacts w/earlier civilizations of lydia & phrygia by river valleys. Greek cities of asia minor surpassed those in mainland in both wealth & cultural. Ionians gathered in loose confidence w/ meeting place at base of mt mykale. Here they worshipped at an altar of poseidon helikonios & built small council chamber for their meetings. Ionian cities defeated by lydians & paid some form of tribute. But ionia & lydia together fell to the persians; attempted revolt led to defeat in sea battle off lade.
