Costume portraiture and their jesuit painter + boxer. Garden was first created by the kangxi emperor for his son. Originally designed as a residence but later expanded the garden. Located in the northwest of beijing, surrounded by mountains, cooler and higher. 800 acres smaller than the forbidden city but larger than the inner palace. Garden was destroyed in the second opium war 1860. Yuanmingyuan contains the whole are (garden of eternal spring+ garden of elegant spring) Inscription of qianlong emperor in the poems he points out the function of the complex is to receive the subject and the vessels of the emperor. Hall of the diligent government- more compact building complex and the main hall is where the emperor deals with most administration. Different sections have different functions, its different than the west. Market street- concubines, maids and servants would pretend to shop here. A day has 12 hours so every 12 years there is a restart of the cycle.
