Focus on a group of painters 8 eccentrics from yangzhou. Yangzhou is close to shanghai, near the yanzi river. Grand canal was built in the sui dynasty to connect the north and the south, it was built for the purpose of transporting grains and other provisions. Originally was built for military purpose but later on became the most used transportation. An important river port, convenient to go to inner china and the north. Literati, artists and trade men were commonly seen here. There was a massacre in the city because the location had a strong hold it was a good area for resistance to manchus (qing conquest) Salt merchants gathered here because salt from the coast had to be distributed, salt merchants were the most wealthy in this time they became the patrons of the artists and commissioned paintings. Most of the salt merchants are well educated.
