CHM 2120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Conjugate Acid, Acid Dissociation Constant, Ammonia

75 views2 pages

Document Summary

Organic molecules can act either as base or acid depending on what it is reacting with. When a ketone reacts with an acid, it acts as the base. Acid base reactions occur in equilibrium so draw the equilibrium arrows. Charge should be conserved in an acid/base reaction. We should have number of electrons in starting material and product. Conjugate acid is the product formed by the addition of h to base. Deprotonate mean, react with a base and the base will remove the proton from the molecule. Protonate mean, react with an acid, and the acid will add a proton to the molecule. To see which side the equilibrium favors, compare the conjugate base and base. If the conjugate base and base have conflicting factors meaning one is stronger in terms of hybridization and the other in terms of electronegativity then we have to look at pka of acids instead.
