In chemical reactions, the amount of each element is always conserved (dalton"s atomic theory) The total amount of electrical charge is always conserved (law of conservation of charge) Reagents are species that take part in a chemical reaction: reactants reagents that are consumed in a reaction, products reagents that are produced in a reaction. To balance equations, the number of atoms for each element must be the same on each side. Strategy: balance elements that occur in only one compound on each side first, balance free elements last os and hs, balance unchanged polyatomic as groups, fractional coefficients are acceptable and can be cleared at the end by multiplication.
