Document Summary
11:30 am: 6 lecs tested on mid 2. Genetic variation: consequences of genetic variation on human health, depends what they are and where they are will determine their impact. Snps usually in noncoding regions: most genetic variation is here, < 1% is coding, vast majority will have no effect. For those in coding seq can be silent: benefits, sickle cell anemia (heterozygote advantage for malaria) Single mutation can cause disease: huntington"s, cf, lac persistence, common that every disease has some genetic component that influences the disease, envt interacts w genes then get phenotype sometimes. Warfarin aka coumadin: most popular anticoagulant drug, prevents blood clots, originally marketed as pesticide but discovered use in humans. Can have blood clots so higher incidence of stroke. Interacts with drugs, foods, and natural health products: patients need to be monitored very closely. Increase or decrease dosage to get it just right (~20 visits)
