Document Summary

Vaccines are used to avoid getting sick. Once you have recovered from an illness you have developed an immunity to the virus. Whenever we get infected we only get infected once. The incidence of colds in elderly is less than when young. Illness can create scarring: if you catch a cold you can due damage to your tissues within your throat causing scarring, this leads to the build up of scarring within your tissues. Antibodies: immobilize invaders, selectively destroy invaders. Macrophages: specialized cells to eat bad cells. Non specific: all cells are targeted, max response. Cold symptoms caused by innate immune system. Adaptive immune system is selective: lag time between exposure and max response is about 2-3 days, response is selective. Only invading cells are targareted: immune system retains a memory of the infection. Next time same microbe invade the response is immediate and strong.
