Reverend edward stone described treatment for ague in 1763. Willow bark is expensive, limited supply, variable effectiveness. Little saliciin extracted from a lot of bark. Salicin was converted to salicylic acid in 1838- better drug than salicin (available in larger quantities) Salicylic acid manufactured from coal tar (waste product in 1800s)
