Document Summary

19th and 20th century european/ north american art. The development of photography was a long process that occurred over a number of years. The principle of the camera was known through the camera obscura. Nic phore ni pce was one of the first to develop a photograph onto paper by using the process of heliography and at first was very ephemeral and was done in negatives. Louis-jacques-mand daguerre developed the daguerrotype, first presented to the public in 1839. This was done by fixing what is seen through the camera obscura onto a highly polished silvered copper plate and developed in mercury vapors. Henry fox talbot was very fond of the camera lucida (similar to the camera obscura, it reflects what is in front of a prism and it projects it down onto paper) though he thought that he had unsatisfactory results.
