A statistic is a characteristic or measure obtained by using data values from a sample. A parameter is a characteristic or measure obtained by using all the data values from a specific population. The mean, also known as the arithmetic average, is the average of the available data values. The population (cid:373)ea(cid:374), de(cid:374)oted (cid:271)y , is the ave(cid:396)age of the populatio(cid:374) measurements. The sample mean, denoted x(bar), is the average of the sample measurements. The median, denoted md, is the midpoint of a data set after arranging the data set in order. The median is then the middle measurement if the size of the data set is odd, and it is the average of the two middle measurements if the size is even. The mode is the values that occurs the most in a data set. Please note that a set of data can have one or two or more modes.
