Discussion next monday on first 3 readings. The expansion and/or integration of technologies, nation/states, and markets. Characterized by enhanced economic interdependence, increased cultural/political influences of multinational companies and rapid improvements in technology. Ex: the development of the internet impacts markets, share of information, etc. Ex: changes in transportation (people, goods/services, airplane travel), shipping and handling changes. The speed and sheer magnitude of this type of integration is unprecedented in human history economic definitions: Globalization is often used to refer to economic globalization that is integration of national economies into an international one through trade, foreign direct investment, capital flows, migration, and the spread of technology. Economy is a major catalyst for globalization. Western culture destroys diversity world wide (music, food, english language, etc. ) Some countries benefit more than others from globalization. Both a threat and opportunity for industrialized markets (competition) Politics, culture, and the economy are all part of globalization.
