APA 2120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Substantia Nigra, Basal Ganglia, Motor Neuron Disease
Document Summary
Problems with the cerebellum, controls coordination and balance. Cerebellar ataxia: occurs when the cerebellum becomes inflamed or damaged, can occur as a result of many diseases, symptoms: inability to coordinate balance, gait, extremity and eye movements. Ataxia: the loss of full control of bodily movements. Near the base of the brain, is a small area called the substantia nigra which contains cells that produce dopamine. Damage to this causes error and damage to movement. Parkinsons"s disease: neurological disorder, degeneration of substantia nigra, affects more than 1 million americans (. 4% of population) (underreported, affects men slightly more than women, associated with malfunctioning basal ganglia, hypokinetic disorder, trouble doing movements, delayed movements, symptoms: Rigidity increased stiffness and resistance to joint movement. Walking problems freezing when they see a door frame (not sure why this happens), shuffling. Hypothesis: no startreact, no early release of prepared movement. Hypothesis: startreact, early release of prepared movement. On/off medication (off meds 1 hr break on meds)
