Document Summary

The sum of socially transmitted ideas, practices and material objects that people create to over come real-life problem. How does it help us: gives us a sense of identity, make us feel like we belong to something, gives choices, morals, values, ways of coping etc, sense of meaning. There is nothing natural or given about culture, it is learned and practiced. It is something shared: with people close to us, within our community. It is trans-generational: it goes across time and space, ex: asking our elders for assistance and advice passed down. It is symbolic: the signs and symbols used to identify yourself being apart of a family, ex: last name, family crests etc. It is adaptive: it doesn"t stay the same; it changes over time because we change over the time. Ex: whether its because of technology, we don"t have to do certain things a certain way due to the advancing of technology.
