Difficulties of definition: religious and cultural norms, change and contestation. Socially and/or legally approved contract between two or more people establishing continuing rights of sexual access and economic rights and responsibilities: people who enter into this contract have certain rights and responsibilities pertaining to their spouse. Prolonged care of human infants: unlike other primate babies, human babies cannot be as independent and are totally dependent on their adult caregivers, greater support = longer infant life. Incest taboo: near universal parent/child; sibling; but other. Exogamy: marriage outside the group : it is believed that parents know better and what who would be most beneficial, ex. clan village, ex. caste, done to maintain wealth and property of former marriage. Cousin: marriages on the father"s side or mother"s side of the family. Monogamy: when a man has one wife and vice versa: serial monogamy: a collection of monogamous relationships; having one spouse at a time but unlimited number of marriages.
