Leadership is based on personal abilities to rally support (achieved status) Ranked: differences in power and prestige according to recognized, hierarchical ranked social groups. +/- permanent leaders: authority to make decisions. Ascribed status (usually seniority in ranked kin group) Political power centralized in a government: an administrative system with specialized personnel, who may or may not form a part of the political organization. Bureaucracy - specialized administrative organization with the day to day running of a society. Monopoly on the legitimate use of force. Found in heterogeneous societies (those societies where there is a lot of differentiation within the populous) Highly stratified: division of society into two or more groups that do not share equally in economic resources, power, or prestige. Market economy is integral to modern states. Women hold positions of political leadership less than men. Power & authority rarely exceeds those of men. Hold positions, often through relationships with men.
