Similar even with the introduction of sod busting ploughs and technology sees the populating of the western plains. Droughts and dust storms caused by poor tillage practices devastated farms and ranches. Cattle ranching led to overgrazing and degradation of soil. Without the original root systems to anchor the soil, much of it blew away. Dust storms and sand storms battered the settlers and buried their roads.
