Social and cultural anthropology (the study of human being across time and space) (lifestyles, beliefs, knowledge systems, material artifacts, relation to bio-physical environment) The way of looking at the world and ourselves personally. 1. emergence of anthropology as a distinct discipline (19th c. ) Colonialism (when one society politically takes control of another territory for settling and economic exploitation) New transport and other technologies facilitated the european expansion (it has greatly shaped the world as we know it today) People had begun to come into contact with others from far regions and were able to try to understand the different societies. Society: independent group of people who live in the same region, and communicate with one another. Social structure: relationships among groups within a society that bind it together. Culture: the ideals, values, and beliefs that people share to interpret experience and generate behavior (although the word culture has been interpreted in many different ways)
