Document Summary

The digestive system: overview of the digestive system. The organs of the digestive system fall into two main groups: alimentary canal (gastrointestinal tract, gut): continuous muscular tube from the mouth to the anus consisting of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and the small and large intestines. Digests food (break it down) and absorbs digested fragments through its lining into the bloodstream. Food in the lumen of the gi tract is said to be outside the body because the canal is open to the external environment at both ends: accessory digestive organs: teeth, tongue, gallbladder, salivary glands, liver, pancreas. The digestive glands and gallbladder lie outside the gi tract and connect to it by ducts. Most of these accessory organs proceed secretory products such as saliva, bile, and enzymes to aid in the digestion of food: relationship of the digestive organs to the peritoneum. Most digestive organs reside in the abdonimopelvic cavity which is lined with slick, friction- reducing serous membranes.
