Peripheral nervous system: cranial & spinal nerves; communication between cns & all parts of body, has 2 parts: Sensory division: somatic & visceral fibers; from receptors to cns. Motor division: motor nerve fibers from cns to effectors, has two. Somatic ns: voluntary; from cns to skeletal muscle. Autonomic ns: involuntary; (visceral motor); from cns to cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, glands: sympathetic division: fight or flight b) parasympathetic division: conserve energy at rest. Astrocytes: star-shaped, most abundant; anchor neurons close to capillaries. Roles in nutrient exchange, antigen presentation, control of environment. Can reach out to neurons and capillaries with star arms. Microglia: protective; touch neurons to monitor well-being, ensures they are ok and if not can transform into macrophages. Keeps environment of cns clean and well functioning. Similar look to astrocytes but projections are thinner and more branch like.
