ANP 1105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Rigor Mortis, Phosphocreatine, Anaerobic Glycolysis
Document Summary
Epimysium: this dense irregular connective tissue surrounds the whole muscle. Skeletal and smooth muscles are elongated so they are called muscle fibers while cardiac muscle isn"t. Mys- or myo- means muscle while sarco means flesh. Skeletal muscle: striated, voluntary, organs that cover the skeleton, can contract rapidly but can get tired too after a while. Cardiac muscle: striated, involuntary, surrounds the heart, can function without stimulation from nervous system but if prompted can increase rate and contract faster. Smooth muscle: involuntary, visceral, non-striated, elongated, surrounds walls of hollow organs such as stomach, bladder, slow contractions. Functions of muscles: movement, maintenance of posture, stabilizing joints, generating heat, protecting organs, propelling substances. Skeletal muscles have a rich supply of nerves. It also has connective tissues, blood vessels, skeletal muscle fibers, nerve fibers. In general one muscle has one artery, one or more vein, one nerve. Arteries are important because they provide oxygen and veins carry away the waste produced by respiration.
