Document Summary

Body wants to maintain certain levels of nutrients, like glucose. So it takes excess glucose for example after a meal and stores it. Body temperature is controlled in three ways: muscle use; conserving heat by constricting blood vessels near the skin; innervate and excite the sweat glands in the body. Recept senses change(stimulus) and sends info (afferent pathway) to control centre which determines the set point and variable maintenance(analyzes infor and determines correct response). The effector provides means for response (output along efferent pathway) Feedback(negative or positive) allows for regulation within a range/ enhanced response. Hypothalamus - complicated endocrine organ, controls a lot of different things, essentially it is the master control system for the autonomic and peripheral nervous systems. Pituitary - receives direction directly from the hypothalamus and receives a unique blood supply from hypothalamus. Cells being targeted by a hormone have to display receptors specific to that hormone. Half-life of most hormones is usually 1-30 minutes.
