ANP 1105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Lymphedema, Immunocompetence, Subclavian Vein
Document Summary
Consists of: network of lymphatic vessels (lymphatics, lymph (fluid in vessels, lymph nodes (cleanse lymph) Lymphoid organs + tissues provide structural basis of immune system by housing phagocytic cells + lymphocytes. Structures include spleen, thymus, tonsils, lymph nodes, other lymphoid tissues. Lymphatic system returns interstitial fluid + leaked plasma proteins back to blood via lymphatic vessels. Elaborate network of drainage vessels that circulates approx 3l of interstitial fluid per day. Offers one-way system, ensuring lymph only flows towards heart. Once interstitial fluid enters lymphatics, it"s called lymph. Blind-ended vessels similar to blood capillaries but more permeable. Weave between tissue cells + blood capillaries. Absent from bones, teeth + bone marrow. Can take up larger molecules + particles that blood capillaries can"t. Ex. proteins, cell debris, pathogens + cancer cells. Can act as route for pathogens or cancer cells to travel throughout body. Endothelial cells overlap loosely to form one-way minivalves.
