ANP 1105 Lecture 3: Topic 3 (Homeostasis) Notes
Document Summary
The ability of the body to maintain relatively stable internal conditions even through there is continuous change in the outside world walter cannon. Involves many systems: adequate blood levels of vital nutrients, heart activity/blood pressure monitored and adjusted as needed, wastes must not accumulate, body temperature. Allows things to change, but brings it back to normal: homeostasis involves keeping things within a certain range. Aging causes responses to be less efficient and homeostasis is no longer maintained to the same degree greater risk for illness: most disease is seen as a disturbance of homeostasis homeostatic imbalance. Blood glucose: positive: amplifies change; enhances original stimulus and output is further stimulated, ex. Blood clotting: break or tear occurs in blood vessel wall. Woman in labor response becomes stronger and stronger. System of motor neurons to smooth and cardiac muscle, and glands to allow responses usually without our awareness. Two branches: sympathetic: fight or flight, parasympathetic: resting.
