Code of hammurabi shows that slavery predates even the earliest of known human laws. There are many different variations of slavery that depend on who is involved, the culture, material, environment, etc. There are also commonalities to a certain degree between all of these types, even if theyre not exactly similar. These commonalities are found in the laws around slavery. Broad characteristics of slavery: the significance of status, the question of inheritance, the matter of mobility, the importance of marking. Slave status and free status have different treatment under the law. There is also a distinction between slave and free and slave and villein (cerf). The status was an either or situation but more of a spectrum with slave at one end and free on the other, and villein somewhere in the middle.
