Selecting the best and brightest lays a strong foundation for excellence. Selection - process of choosing individuals who have relevant qualifications to fill existing or projected job openings. Formal responsibility of hr, line managers typically make the final decision. They should understand the objectives and policies of selection. Job specifications help identify the knowledge, skills, abilities and others (ksaos) that lead to superior performance. Managers then use selection methods such as interviews, references, and pre- employment tests to measure applicant ksaos against competencies required for the job. Complete and clear specifications help differentiate qualified from unqualified applicants and reduce biases and prejudices. Research shows that applicants whose ksaos are well matched perform better and are more satisfied. In addition to requirements a company may place high priority on selecting individuals who match the values and culture of their organizations. The number of steps and their sequences will vary with the organization and level of job to be filled.
