Motivation is the internal state which pushes us to do something. The extent to which persistent effort is directed towards a goal. When it is work related (or lack of), we are looking at the persistent working towards organizational goals. Basic characteristics of motivation: will determine if you can persistently focus on getting things done. Maslow"s hierarchy of needs, aldefers erg theory, and mcclelland"s theory of needs. Needs theories tell you that there are a lot of needs that people have and by satisfying these needs in your employees they will be more committed. There are conditions which can be met to make this happen. Maslow"s hierarchy of needs: 5 levels: lowest is the physiological needs (water, food, shelter). Can help employees meet physiological needs so they can buy basic necessities (pay them enough). Can meet these by making the workplace positive, free from violence and harassment, can offer job security (tenure).
