ADM 2336 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Organizational Commitment, Cognitive Distortion, Goal Setting
Document Summary
Motivation: a set of energetic forces that originates both within and outside an employee, initiates work related effort, and determines its direction, intensity and persistence. Direction of effort (what are you going to do right now) Intensity of effort (how hard are you going to work on it) Persistence of effort (how long are you going to work on it) Engagement: synonym for high levels of intensity and persistence in work effort. Expectancy theory: cognitive process that employees go through to make choices among different voluntary responses. Expectancy: the belief that exerting a high level of effort will result in the successful performance of some task. Self-efficacy: belief that a person has the capabilities needed to perform the behaviours required for task success. Feeling efficacious will lead to employee feeling higher level of expectancy. Consider past accomplishment, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, emotional cues. Instrumentality: the belief that successful performance will result in some outcome.
