The use of power and influence to direct the activities of followers toward goal achievement: can occupy formal or assigned leadership roles with authority to direct employees. Individuals can also emerge to occupy informal leadership roles. Measure: objective measures of unit performance performance, subjective measures focused on followers. Role taking (leader voiced) vs. role making (follower voiced) phases. Both- leaders can be born with a certain set of traits, more linked to emergence than effectiveness. Conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness to experiences, extraversion, general cognitive ability, energy level, stress tolerance, confidence. Leader makes decisions on own without asking opinion of employees. Leader presents problems to employees, asking their opinions before ultimately making the decision him/herself. Leader presents problem to group of employees and seeks consensus on a solution. Leaders give the employees the responsibility for making decisions within specified boundary conditions. Model suggests that situational aspects are more important than just the leader him/herself: decision significance.
